Stair towers are used to access multi-level structures. Unlike individual stairs that are incorporated with rack and shelving systems, often stairs are required to be independent of the system, Schmidt stair towers meet this need. Stair towers are a self-supported structure that has multiple levels to exit onto the rack modules.
Occassionally, stair towers are also used for exterior access to buildings when vertical ladders are not sufficient. Stair towers can also be used with mezzanines, if the mezzanine is multi-level or has an unusual deck height that requires multiple landings to achieve. IBC code requires a landing for every twelve feet of vertical height for a stair.
